In travel news for August 30th, 2022 we have news about an upcoming Airline Strike, a new code-share from United Airlines, and we check in with Jamaica.
Jamaica Back to Pre-Pandemic Levels of Travel
Jamaica, the popular Caribbean destination, has been working tirelessly to keep their tourism sector afloat while keeping their citizens safe. Employing a resilient corridor to keep travelers and locals safe, Jamaica was one of the first destinations to open up, opening in June of 2020. It now appears that all that hard work has paid off, the government of Jamaica has said that 2022 travel is on track to match, if not surpass, tourism from 2019; the last ful year of tourism before the pandemic. Resorts are continuing to establish new properties on island, and many airlines are establishing more direct routes to the island, including flights into Ian Fleming International Airport in Ocho Rios. I appears that this beautiful Caribbean island is set to continue it’s travel dominance for years to come.
Airline Pilots Set to Strike
The Air Line Pilots Association has announced a planned picket for Thursday, September 1st. Unlike many strikes and pickets, which are over contract disputes, this one is born out of frustration with the numerous delays and cancellations that have been affecting travelers as well as pilots, cabin crew, and support staff. The strikes are set to occur in two hour increments in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Washington D.C., Orlando, Salt Lake City, San Franciso, and Seattle. This strike is timed to coincide with the busy labor day travel weekend.
United Airlines About to Announce New Code-Share
Code-Shares are a vital part of the airline industry. These agreements are between two carriers and allows for each to sell tickets on flights operated by the other. A code-share expands the reach of an airline as well as reduces cost and complexity for travelers. United Airlines is planning to announce a new code-share coming up with Dubai’s Emirates. This will expand United’s reach into the Middle East in time for an expected surge in travel thanks to events such as the World Cup kicking off on November 20th in in Qatar. This agreement will also allow those traveling with Emirates greater reach to many international destinations.
