In Travel News for September 15th, 2022 we talk about an upcoming Strike that will dramatically affect European Air Travel, United Airlines new codeshare, and Avalon Waterways expanding their European offerings.
United Airlines Announces Codeshare with Emirates
We previously talked about a planned codeshare between United Airlines and Emirates. Today the codeshare has been officially announced. A code-share is an agreement between two airlines to allow them to sell seats on each others flights as if it were under a single airline. This is very advantageous to travelers as it extends the reach of the airline they are flying without having to book multiple flights to reach a destination. With this agreement United Airlines will gain deeper access to the Middle East, and Emirates customers will gain access to United flights throughout the world.
Avalon Waterways Expands into Portugal
Avalon Waterways is expanding into Portugal with planned sailings on the Douro River starting in 2024. These new Portugal itineraries will take place on Avalon Waterways newest ship, the Avalon Algeria, which translates to Happiness in Portuguese. The Avalon Algeria includes a sky deck pool, 37 panorama suites, 14 deluxe suites, and carries up to 102 guests. The inaugural sailing will be an 8 day ‘Vida Portugal Vineyards & Villages’ with a variety of excursions available to travelers. Prices for this itinerary start at around $3,400 per person.
Air Traffic Controller Strike in France
Over 1,000 flights have already been canceled in anticipation of an air traffic control Strike in France. The French Aviation Authority is asking airlines to reduce their schedules by 50% and asking travelers to postpone visiting the European country. The strike will run from 6:00am Friday morning until 6:00am Saturday morning, with more to follow. There are a variety of ways this will affect European Air Travel beyond those wanting to travel to or from France. Airlines that travel through French airspace will face disruptions, cancellations, or longer routes as they bypass French airspace. Travelers that have a connection in France will also face disruptions or cancellations. In Europe this will be a large disruption that will ripple out to many countries for days after the strike ends.
