Uniworld Boutique River Cruises Boosts Sustainability with Food Waste Reduction and Expanded Vegan/Vegetarian Menu

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises is furthering its commitment to sustainable practices on board its ships with the implementation of the Leanpath food waste reduction system and the introduction of an expanded range of vegan and vegetarian options for travelers.

The Leanpath system is an innovative, automated food waste tracking solution that aids ships in preventing food waste. Since introducing the system on six of its ships in 2021, Uniworld has successfully prevented 13,156 kg of food from being wasted, resulting in a reduction of nearly 100 tons of carbon emissions as of December 2022.

This initiative is just one aspect of Uniworld's ambitious sustainability targets, which have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) – the only River Cruise line to achieve this distinction. The cruise line's "How We Tread Right" sustainability strategy encompasses a 50 percent reduction in food waste by 2025, the elimination of single-use plastics, achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and offering experiences that positively impact the communities visited by Uniworld's cruises.

To cater to a wider range of dietary preferences, Uniworld has also introduced an extended menu of vegan and vegetarian options across its entire fleet. Mouthwatering dishes such as jambalaya, tempura vegetables, sweet potato and tofu stew, French braised artichoke, and butternut squash risotto are now available to delight travelers' palates.

Julie Higgins, Sustainability Officer at Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, emphasizes the company's ongoing commitment to sustainable practices, stating that Earth Month and every month are opportunities to prioritize sustainability. She expressed pride in the expansion of sustainable food choices and best practices throughout the fleet, including the inventive new vegan and vegetarian menus. Uniworld has also fulfilled its promise to remove single-use plastics (SUPs) from its ships, with guest rooms now free of all plastics.

Moreover, the Cruise line has eliminated single-use plastics in all rooms and suites, providing reusable water bottles, refillable pump amenities, reusable laundry bags, and even bamboo key cards.

With these substantial strides in sustainable practices, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises is setting a new standard for eco-conscious travel, ensuring that passengers can enjoy memorable experiences while minimizing their impact on the planet.
