Southwest Adjusts Fall and Winter Schedules Due to Boeing 737 Max Delivery Delays

In travel news for May 1st, 2023 we talk about how Delays at Boeing are affecting the fall schedule for SouthWest Airlines.

As the fall and early winter travel seasons approach, SouthWest Airlines has shared news of a reduced flight schedule due to a delay in the delivery of Boeing 737 Max aircraft. Initially set to receive 90 737-8 Max planes this year, the airline now expects only 70 aircraft to be delivered, as discussed during their first-quarter earnings call.

The summer flight schedules will remain unchanged, thanks to a current Pilot Shortage. However, by September, the delivery delays will start to have a more significant impact. Southwest's pilot hiring is projected to match the airline's fleet capacity at that time, leading to an anticipated 6% to 7% decrease in capacity during the fourth quarter.

This adjustment in scheduling is a direct response to Boeing's announcement in mid-April regarding nonstandard manufacturing processes for fittings near the rear of several 737 Max planes by parts supplier Spirit AeroSystems. This has resulted in delivery delays as inspections and repairs are carried out on the affected aircraft.

Despite these challenges, SouthWest Airlines remains dedicated to achieving pre-pandemic frequency levels across its network by the end of the year. Additionally, the airline's flights to Hawaii and the 18 new stations introduced during the pandemic will not be impacted. However, travelers should note that the planned expansion of services in cities like Denver, Colorado, and Phoenix, Arizona, where the airline intended to increase flights beyond pre-pandemic levels, will be postponed.

SouthWest Airlines reported a challenging first quarter, mainly due to operational difficulties during the holiday season and lost revenue from cancellations in January. Despite these hurdles, the company has observed a return to normal booking patterns and continues to focus on enhancing its services within the managed travel space. This commitment is highlighted by a 1% gain in managed Business Travel market share.
