Viking, the renowned Cruise line, is making waves in the cruise industry as it announces year-round river cruising in Europe with an exciting winter itinerary, "Treasures of the Rhine." Starting on December 23, Viking will be the first line to navigate Europe's rivers throughout the year, offering passengers unparalleled access to landmarks and experiences away from the typical tourist crowds.
The 10-day journey, commencing from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Basel, Switzerland, and vice versa, marks a significant step for Viking in pioneering river cruises during the quieter, colder months. This exciting development allows travelers to explore the European culture and winter sights, providing a unique vantage point of Europe's iconic cities and landscapes.
The itinerary includes captivating cities such as Cologne, France; Heidelberg, Germany, and Strasbourg, France. From the charming town of Breisach, Germany, nestled on the banks of the Rhine, to the historical significance of Heidelberg, Germany and Mainz, Germany and the majestic Gothic cathedral of Cologne, France each destination on this itinerary is chosen to provide a comprehensive experience of European culture and history.
The journey culminates in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam after visiting Arnhem, providing a full-circle experience of the treasures of the Rhine River. This inaugural journey of the "Treasures of the Rhine" Cruise begins in December 2023, extending through early March 2024, with fares starting at $1,999 per person.
The river ships, Viking Alruna and Viking Tialfi, will be navigating these waters, each carrying up to 190 guests. Designed with comfort in mind, these identical longships are equipped with modern amenities like a restaurant, bar and lounge, library, and an expansive sun deck. Furthermore, these ships boast of eco-friendly features such as solar panels, an onboard organic herb garden, and energy-efficient hybrid engines, ensuring that the journey is as environmentally responsible as it is enjoyable.
"The Middle Rhine is one of our most popular destinations," said Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking. Its constantly changing views of hilltop castles, historic towns, and terraced Vineyards make it a region best explored by the river, according to Hagen. Viking's decision to offer this year-round itinerary aligns with the interest of many guests who have sailed the Rhine during other seasons and expressed a desire to experience Europe during quieter times of the year.
As part of its 25th Anniversary Sale for residents of the U.S. and Canada, Viking is offering free airfare and special savings on all river voyages from 2023-2025 through May 31, 2023. This move, coupled with the new year-round European river cruises, strengthens Viking's commitment to providing unique and immersive travel experiences.
This innovation by Viking underlines the company's commitment to evolving in response to passenger interests. By providing year-round river cruising in Europe, Viking is opening up a new world of possibilities for travelers seeking unique perspectives of Europe's landscapes, cities, and cultures. With Viking expanding its operations to areas like the Nile River in Egypt, it's clear that the company is set to continue its pioneering ways in the world of river cruising.
