Hawaii Wildfires Highlight Importance of Travel Insurance and Readiness

In travel news for August 10, 2023 we talk about devastating wild fires ravage Maui, Hawaii.

Maui, Hawaii – As wildfires, intensified by Hurricane Dora's strong winds, sweep across the Hawaiian island of Maui, the situation particularly in historic Lahaina has been described as "apocalyptic". In some extreme circumstances, travelers have had to dive into the ocean to escape the intense flames, with some being saved from by coat guard ships dispatched to assist.  This situation highlights the vulnerability of travelers during natural disasters.

The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority, in a recent release, strongly advised against non-essential travel to Maui. Tourists currently in Maui for non-essential reasons are requested to leave, as the focus now pivots to assisting affected residents and businesses. Those planning trips to West Maui are encouraged to reschedule, while those heading to other parts of Maui or Hawaiʻi Island's Kohala Coast should get in touch with their Travel Advisor for updates. Thankfully, travel to other Hawaiian regions remains unaffected.

Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui is still operational, but given the uncertain nature of the situation, airlines are urging passengers to monitor flight statuses. Travel disruptions are anticipated, with Hawaiian Airlines allowing affected passengers to reschedule without fees. The airline also offers the flexibility of retaining the ticket's unused value for future travel. Other carriers have announced similar accommodations.

The scale of the emergency has placed tremendous strain on local healthcare. Maui's hospitals are overwhelmed, particularly with burn victims. The Lieutenant Governor emphasized the pressing need to airlift patients to facilities capable of advanced burn treatment.

As the fires remain unpredictable due to changing winds and terrains, the government is collaborating with hotels and local airlines to potentially evacuate tourists to safer islands.  This catastrophe underscores the imperative of Travel Insurance and staying informed during trips.

With such unforeseeable and impactful events, it becomes essential for travelers to be prepared, informed, and understand the vital role Travel Insurance can play.

our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Maui.
