Diyarbakir Fortress

Diyarbakir Fortress has been a part of the city of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey for over 1,500 years. The fortress has survived countless wars, sieges, earthquakes and restorations and today stands as a testament to a rich history. Diyarbakir Fortress is now a tourist attraction, drawing both locals and international visitors alike who come to experience its ancient architecture and the stunning views of the city it provides.

Built by the Romans in the 4th century, the fortress is located in the heart of the bustling city. Encompassing 27 hectares and surrounded by a large city wall, it is a formidable presence in Diyarbakir. The walls of the fortress are made of sun-dried mud brick, which is then covered in black basalt stones. This gives the walls a striking appearance, with their black and yellow patterns. The outer walls are up to 12 metres thick, making the fortress incredibly sturdy and well suited to withstand the numerous battles and sieges it has seen throughout its history.

On the inside, the fortress is just as impressive. The walls are lined with bastions, gateways, towers, and buildings from various points in history. Some buildings date back to the original Roman walls, while others were added during the Ayyubid or Ottoman period. Visitors can also explore the various mosques and churches, including the Ulu Camii or Great Mosque, built in the 15th century. Wandering through the fortress, visitors are transported to a different era as they admire the grand buildings and small alleyways and staircases.

Diyarbakir Fortress is definitely worth the climb. As visitors make their way up the winding staircases of the inner walls they are treated to a breathtaking view of Diyarbakir, the bustling city and its surroundings. From this incredible vantage point, visitors can take in the incredible cityscape below and observe the Tigris river in the distance. The expansive view is unmatched in the city and provides a perfect spot for photography or simply taking in the wonders of the city.

Diyarbakir Fortress offers guests an immense amount of history, beauty and culture. Whether they are keen to learn more about the fortress and its history, or simply want to take in the stunning city views, the fortress is an unmissable experience. Visitors should plan to spend at least an afternoon exploring the fortress, as there is so much to discover. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the walls, take a break at a cafe or restaurant, or simply enjoy the stunning views from atop the walls. An experience of Diyarbakir Fortress is an unforgettable piece of travel that visitors will never forget.
