So today I received a big scary cardboard envelope from the IRS. And amazingly enough I pleasantly surprised with what was inside.

Before I continue indulge me with quick background on myself. I suffer from a condition called retinitis pigmentosa. Basically this means that the photo receptors in my retina are slowly dying. My field of view has decreased to where I am legally blind. Which between this and my love of travel is what inspired me to create the Adept Traveler, a travel agency that specializes in Accessible Travel.
So now that you’re caught up let’s talk about what was in the Envelope.
Contained in the envlope is a letter in large print, both in English and spansih., And the same letter in Braile.
The letter simply informs me that, because I declare blindness on my taxes, that I can opt to receive future correspondence from the IRS in large print, audio, or Braile.
This was a pleasant surprise. So often government is hostile towards the disabled. And I think the reason for that is those making decisions tend to be able-bodied people with little to no experience with the disabled community, So I believe this hostilities comes from ignorance and not malicious intent.
Having this little gesture really means a lot. I hope that Federal, State, County, and Municipal governments continue to improve their policies and procedures to be more friendly to the disabled community.
