In travel news for March 28, 2022 we have updates from Greece and Australia, and we talk a little about the continuing violence In Cancun.
Greece was the first European countries to welcome back travelers in 2021, and it was rewarded with a busy travel season. Even though Europe is mostly re-opened, Greece still expects a strong tourist season. To make travel easier the country is further relaxing their COVID entry restrictions. Travelers to Greece will no longer have to fill out the electronic passenger locator form. Entry to Greece requires either proof of vaccination, proof of recovery, or proof of an approved negative covid test. While not as open as Ireland or the United Kingdom, it’s still progress in returning to a pre pandemic travel normalcy.
The recently opened country of Australia is also relaxing entry restrictions. Starting April 17 travelers will no longer be required to provide a pre-arrival covid test. Australia will still require visitors to be fully vaccinated to be allowed entry. And that’s not all. In addition to relaxed entry restrictions Australia will allow Cruise ships back to their ports. In response Royal Caribbean has already announced Australian itineraries starting in 2023.
Violence continues to spill over to tourist areas in Cancun. Mexico’s Cancun International Airport was temporarily closed today. Initial reports of a shooting hit social media along with video of passengers fleeing. Terminals had been evacuated and as of yet there is currently no confirmation from authorities on the cause. Cancun, and other parts of Southern Mexico are currently experiencing an increase in violence as multiple cartels fight for control over drug trafficking routes. We will do a deeper dive into this topic at a later date.
