Travel News: COVID Update from Spain, Good News from Disney, and JetBlue Intervienes in the Spirt-Frontier Merger

In travel news for April 6, 2022 we have a COVID update from Spain, good news from Disney, and an unexpected twist in the Frontier-Spirit merger.

Spain has just announced that they are relaxing entry restrictions.  Starting today, April 6, unvaccinated travelers will be allowed entry.  Unvaccinated travelers will need to provide a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours, or a supervised negative antigen test taken within 24 hours.  Proof of recovery is also accepted as is proof of vaccination.  Children under the age of 12 are exempt.  Spain defines full vaccination in the same way as most of Europe, and that’s having received the final dose of a vaccine or booster within the previous 9 months.

Disney is bringing back the popular character meet and greet this month.  The much beloved activity has been on pause since the early days of the pandemic.  Starting April 18 fans will be able to hug their favorite Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse and all of his friends.  The character meet and greets will be available at both Disney World, and Disney Land within the United States, as well as abroad the Disney Cruise Line.

We’ve covered previously how Frontier and Spirit were attempting to merge, well there is an interesting and unexpected challenge which has arisen.  JetBlue has made an unsolicited offer to buy Spirit Airlines for $3.6 Billion.  JetBlue said late Tuesday that this offer is “superior” to the merger deal between Frontier and Spirit and that this is the “most attractive opportunity” for Spirits shareholders.   A Frontier-Spirit merger would jump the combined airline to the number 5 spot of most miles flown, putting them ahead of JetBlue and Alaskan.  A JetBlue-Spirit merger could create an equally large airline.  We will continue to provide updates in future episodes of Today in Travel as this continues to unfold.
