In travel news for August 3, 2022 we talk about a few upcoming disruptions to European Air Travel out of London Heathrow, Spain and Portugal.
British Airways Cancels Flights
Air Travel his summer has been, well difficult. London Hethrow Airport has been hit especially hard. In an effort to decrease the traffic through the airport to a level that can be more easily managed by current staff British Airways, who has also experienced an unusually number of issues themselves, has suspended sales of tickets for flights with a duration of less then 3 hours out of Heathrow. This suspension of short-haul flights came at the request of Hethrow officials and should only last until August 15th.
Portugal Airport Strike
Air Travel in and out of Portugal is going to be more difficult soon as civil aviation workers from two separate unions plan a walkout. The Strike will start on August 19th and last till August 21st, unless an agreement is reached, and it will directly affect 10 of the countries airports. The strike dates correspond with one of the busiest weekends for air travel in Portugal. Airports that aren’t directly affected by the strike will see an increase in traffic as flights get diverted, delayed, or even canceled. Even though the strike is for a few days, the ripple effect can impact air travel in the region for weeks.
Spain Airline Strike
EasyJet pilots in Spain have recently announced an organized walkout this month that will last a total of 9 days. These strikes are broken across three weekends and will each last for 72 hours, starting with the weekend of August 12th. With Spain’s neighbor Portugal about to experience an airport workers strike on the weekend of August 19th, it’s looking like Air Travel in the whole region will be difficult for the month of August and probably into early September. That is unless a deal is reached with the unions.
