In Travel News for December 19th, 2022 we have an update on the Eurostar Rail Strike, we talk about Holiday Travel within the United States, and we talk about the situation at Manchu Picchu.-date on all things travel.
Eurostar Holiday Strike Update
Europe and the United Kingdom are expecting many strikes to affect Holiday Travel this year. The rail line, Eurostar, was planning strikes on December 16th, 18th, 22nd, and 23rd. The first two dates have come and gone with no strike. Currently it looks like a deal could be reached, the union has called off the strikes for the 16th and the 18th to give workers time to vote on an updated agreement. If the agreement is accepted then further strike action will no longer be necessary. This isn’t the only strike to affect travel in the UK and Europe. If you are traveling over the next few weeks expect things to get a little chaotic.
Civil Unrest in Peru Strands Travelers at Machu Picchu
Civil Unrest in Peru has recently created an unexpected problem for travelers. Over the weekend hundreds of travelers, many U.S. citizens, were stranded in the Andes Mountains around the popular destination Machu Picchu. On December 7th the president of Peru was arrested and deposed after attempting to illegally dissolve the parliament in an effort to avoid an impeachment vote against him. The recent unrest was caused by violent Protests over the weekend in support of the deposed leader. These protests have blocked roads and rail lines that transport travelers from Machu Picchu to the airport 50 miles away. As of today it’s being reported that travelers have started to reach airports or their embassies . Those planning to travel to Peru should expect delays for the next few days at least.
Storms to Impact Travel this Holiday
Holiday Travel within the United States could be more troublesome then originally thought. It’s being reported by AccuWeather that a series of storms could form at the end of the week creating heavy snow and rain combined with strong winds and freezing temperatures across much of the U.S. The days before Christmas are usually the busiest for travel within the U.S. with many traveling by plane or car, both of which could be affected by these storms. Right now this is just a possibility, how these storms will evolve is still unknown. If you do plan on traveling this holiday season we recommend keeping a close eye on the weather, and be prepared to make adjustments to your travel plans if possible to avoid delays and disruptions
