Global Travel Update: Overtourism in Europe, Belgian Pilot Strikes, and Unrest in France

In travel news for July 14, 2023 we talk about the surge in demand for some of Europes most popular destinations, this weekend strikes will affect Air Travel in Belgium, and we have an update on the recent unrest in France and the effect on travel.

Tourist Thrills & Trials in the European Travel Boom

Despite crowds, labor riots, and high prices, Europe is experiencing a surge of tourists, primarily from the US. This surge has given rise to "revenge travel" where pandemic-saved dollars are spent on travel. The Acropolis, Rome, and Venice have been particularly packed. Tourism this year is set to surpass 2019 records. Despite labor riots in Paris, high airfares, and bustling crowds, the tourism enthusiasm remains undeterred. However, this rampant tourism uncovers a disappointing truth: promises of responsible, sustainable, and Earth-friendly travel might have been empty. Yet, it's important to note that travel to and within Europe is still 10% below the 2019 level due to factors like the War in Ukraine and Chinese tourists not fully returning.

Belgian Pilot Strike Sparks Ryanair Cancellations: Traveler’s Woe Continues

Due to disputes over pay and working conditions, pilots at Belgium's Brussels South Charleroi Airport are set to Strike this weekend, prompting Ryanair to cancel 44 flights for Saturday with more expected for Sunday. The airline is said to have wanted to cancel an agreement on working hours and rest periods, and pilots are still dealing with a 20% pay cut implemented at the beginning of the pandemic. The strike will potentially impact about 140 flights, disrupting travel plans and affecting Ryanair's operations. However, flights operated by crews based outside Belgium are expected to continue as usual, with Ryanair stating that 60% of its flights to and from Belgium will operate normally.

Navigating Travel Plans Amid French Protests - July 2023

France has been experiencing violent Protests following the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old during a police traffic stop, resulting in over 850 arrests during a single weekend. Although the situation has somewhat calmed, tensions remain, especially ahead of Bastille Day. The French government has imposed a ban on fireworks to prevent potential unrest. The majority of tourists visiting France do so without incident, but advice remains to monitor the media, check travel advice, and follow local authority directives. During periods of unrest, road travel can be disrupted, and local transport may be reduced. Depending on your situation there is probably no need to cancel travel plans, flexibility is advised and tourists are encouraged to ensure their Travel Insurance provides sufficient coverage.  Just incase.
