Navigating Peru: Travel Advisory Amid Unrest

In travel news for July 21, 2023 we talk about how Political Unrest could impact travel in Peru

Peru, known for its rich history, diverse landscapes, and vibrant culture, has recently been the focus of travel advisories due to ongoing political Protests and a newly declared state of emergency. For travelers planning a visit, it's important to keep a close eye on these developments.

The Foreign Office updated its travel advice for the South American country recently, warning of a "large" protest in Lima, the capital city, and southern parts of Peru. Anticipating road travel disruptions and potential limitations to the capital's center access, a related state of emergency was declared.

Political Protests in Peru can be unpredictable, escalating quickly, and even lead to violence. Travelers are advised to be cautious and avoid large gatherings and areas where protests are taking place.

In case of Protests, if possible, the guidance recommends staying in a safe place. Monitoring local media, including social platforms, is also recommended to keep up with the local authorities' advice and stay informed about unfolding events. Protests may lead to travel disruption, including road blockades, suspension of Train services, and airport closures, even in tourist areas.

Travelers should also note that Peru has been facing various levels of turmoil for months, with previous Protests resulting in clashes between protestors and security forces. This unrest has led to casualties, most notably in the Puno and Apurimac regions in December and January.

Additionally, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has emphasized that local police and emergency services in these regions may not respond as efficiently to traveler emergencies compared to other parts of Peru. If Protests or criminal activity result in travel disruption or damage to infrastructure, the U.S. government's ability to provide embassy support will be limited, this could also be the case for local authorities.

Travelers arriving in Peru are also advised to be prepared for delays or disruption due to Protests. Train services, especially those in the south such as trains to or from the iconic Machu Picchu, may be temporarily suspended or disrupted as a precautionary measure.

In these turbulent times, the importance of heeding safety advice for traveling in Peru cannot be understated. While Peru's beauty and allure remain undiminished, understanding the current situation and taking necessary precautions can go a long way in ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey in this magnificent South American country.
