Europe Braces for Widespread Travel Strikes this Fall

In travel news for September 1, 2023 we talk about More strikes to affect travel in Europe this fall.

Amid rising inflation and stagnant wages, Europe is experiencing an increasing number of strikes affecting various industries. Here’s what travelers need to be aware of, especially if planning to visit France, Italy, and the United Kingdom during the coming months.

If you are headed to France during the Rugby World Cup taking place from September 8 to October 28, be prepared for some challenges. The country's largest air traffic control union has called for nationwide strikes on September 15 and October 13. A representative of the union cited rising inflation and unresponsive authorities as the main reasons. These strikes are expected to affect not just French flights but also those from other countries that use French airspace.

Paris Metro workers have warned of potential walkouts during the Rugby World Cup. While Train drivers are receiving extra pay for the event, station staff aren’t, leading to discontent among union members.

Italy is also preparing for multiple strikes, both at the airport and in the air. Ground staff around the country will take a 24-hour strike on September 8. Following this, air traffic controllers are expected to stage an eight-hour walkout on September 16 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The impact of these strikes on flights remains uncertain, although some flights outside of these hours may not be affected.

In the United Kingdom, ground handling staff at Luton Airport will conduct 24-hour strikes on September 6 and September 13. These walkouts are projected to severely disrupt Wizz Air operations. The country's largest rail union has announced fresh strikes on September 2. Various issues including pay, working conditions, and job security are being cited as the reasons for these strikes.

It’s advisable to stay updated on the latest news and to check with airlines and other transportation providers before traveling. Remember, these strikes will not just affect local transport but can also have ripple effects on international travel.

Travelers should brace for a challenging autumn season in Europe. With strikes being planned in France, Italy, and the United Kingdom, staying informed and planning for delays will be crucial. Keep an eye on announcements from unions, governments, and airlines to minimize the inconvenience.
