HX Adjusts Itineraries: West Africa Cruises on Hold, MS Maud's New Role

Listen to this Article

In travel news for March 12, 2024 we talk about HX canceling West Africa sailings.

Key Points

  • HX suspends West Africa sailings amid regional instability.
  • MS Spitsbergen to enter dry dock during the pause period.
  • MS Maud reassigned to Hurtigruten for Norwegian Coastal Express service.

HX's Strategic Shift in Cruise Operations

HX, previously known as Hurtigruten Expeditions, has announced significant adjustments to its Cruise operations, citing concerns for passenger and crew safety amid rising instability in West Africa. The cruise line, which debuted its West Africa sailings in November 2023, has decided to put these voyages on hold.

Navigating West Africa's Instability: The Impact on HX's Plans

Originally scheduled to run from September 25, 2024, through March 30, 2025, the West Africa cruises aboard MS Spitsbergen have been temporarily suspended. This decision reflects the company's commitment to ensuring a safe and secure travel environment for its guests. The cruise line is currently working on redirecting MS Spitsbergen for the upcoming season, with plans to place the vessel in dry dock.

Rebooking and Compensation for Affected Guests

Guests booked on the impacted West Africa sailings will be contacted directly by HX or their Travel Advisor. The company is offering two options for those affected: a full refund or a 125 percent future Cruise credit, allowing flexibility and choice for its customers.

MS Maud's Transition to Coastal Express Service

In a strategic shift, HX also announced that MS Maud will temporarily join the fleet of Hurtigruten to operate the Norwegian Coastal Express. This move comes after MS Maud experienced a rogue wave incident in the North Sea in December and subsequent repairs. The vessel is set to return to service in mid-April for expedition cruises around the British Isles before spending the summer in the Arctic.

Starting in November, MS Maud will assist Hurtigruten in fulfilling its longstanding commitment to the Norwegian government for operating the Coastal Express. This essential service has been a part of Norway's coastal life since 1893, functioning as both a sightseeing Cruise and a ferry. MS Maud is scheduled to rejoin the HX fleet in 2026.

Hurtigruten's Environmental Commitment and Fleet Flexibility

The CEO of Hurtigruten Group emphasized the company's significant environmental upgrade efforts within the Cruise industry. The flexibility of Hurtigruten Group's diverse fleet allows for such strategic reassignments, ensuring the continuity of services like the Coastal Express while upgrading other vessels.

Proactive Communication with Travelers

HX has reached out to all guests affected by these itinerary changes, offering them the same compensation options as those impacted by the West Africa Cruise suspension. Additionally, guests who had bookings on certain Antarctic sailings on MS Maud have been automatically transferred to sailings on other ships in the fleet.

Final Thoughts

HX's decision to suspend its West Africa sailings reflects a cautious and responsible approach in the face of regional instability. The reassignment of MS Maud to the Norwegian Coastal Express underlines the company's adaptability and commitment to maintaining high-quality services. For travelers affected by these changes, HX offers flexible options to ensure their future Cruise experiences meet their expectations and preferences.
