Travel News: Columbia, Mexico, and the United Kingdom

In Travel News for January 30th, 2023 we talk about violence in Columbia, seaweed in Mexico, and a new travel application to visit the United Kingdom.

Travel Advisory for Columbia

The U.S. State Department is advising travelers to Colombia to exercise caution as the country faces widespread violent crime and organized criminal activities. Terrorist organizations, including the National Liberation Army, Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People’s Army, and Segunda Marquetalia, continue to operate and launch attacks in the country. These attacks can occur with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, shopping areas, public facilities, and more. Demonstrations are also a common occurrence in Colombia and can result in road closures, affecting travel and transportation. As a result, it is advisable for travelers to be vigilant and monitor local news and updates before traveling.

Less Seaweed Expected in Mexico for 2023

Travelers visiting Mexico's Caribbean shores can look forward to a Sargassum-free experience this 2023 season. Mexican officials analyzed the behavior of the two most prevalent species of Sargassum and forecast lower levels of the stinky seaweed compared to previous years, likely to be similar to the 2019 levels. Atmospheric conditions and ocean currents play a crucial role in the influx and displacement of the macroalgae. Despite the lower predictions, officials are still encouraging local communities to take preventive measures. The Cancun government has announced plans to invest in keeping the city's award-winning beaches clean for travelers this year, employing around 180 workers to maintain the beauty of the beaches during the high season.

The U.K. Travel Authorization Document Coming Soon

The United Kingdom will soon require travelers to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization document for entry into the country. The Electronic Travel Authorization is mandatory for all foreign visitors, including those from visa-free countries such as the United States. The requirement will apply to all types of visitors, including tourists, business travelers, students, and those visiting for medical reasons. The implementation of the Electronic Travel Authorization system is aimed at improving U.K. border control measures and providing authorities with more accurate migration information. The process of obtaining an Electronic Travel Authorization will be convenient as applicants can apply from home and the form should only take a few minutes to complete. The application requires a valid passport, personal information, travel plans, and a debit or credit card. Most applications will be processed quickly, within 48 to 72 hours.
