Global Entry

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. It is available to U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents, and citizens of certain other countries.

To apply for Global Entry, individuals must first complete an online application and pay a non-refundable fee of $100. The application includes a background check and an in-person interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center. During the interview, applicants will have their fingerprints and photographs taken, and will be asked questions about their travel history and background.

Once approved, Global Entry members can use automated kiosks at select airports to clear U.S. Customs upon arrival. This eliminates the need to wait in long lines and complete paper customs declarations forms. Instead, travelers simply scan their passport or U.S. lawful permanent resident card, provide their fingerprints for biometric verification, and answer a few customs-related questions on the kiosk.

In addition to the expedited clearance at U.S. airports, Global Entry membership also includes TSA PreCheck, a separate program that allows for expedited screening at participating U.S. Airport Security checkpoints. TSA PreCheck members do not have to remove their shoes, belts, or light jackets, and can leave laptops and liquids in their carry-on bags.

Global Entry membership is valid for five years, after which members must renew their membership by going through the application and interview process again. However, members may be eligible for a shorter renewal process called "GOES" (Global Online Enrollment System) if they meet certain requirements.

Global Entry is available at over 60 U.S. airports and at several preclearance locations outside the United States, including Abu Dhabi, Aruba, Dublin, Istanbul, and Toronto. However, it is important to note that not all airports or preclearance locations have the automated kiosks, and in some cases, members may still be required to go through traditional customs clearance procedures.

Additionally, Global Entry membership also includes access to NEXUS and SENTRI programs, which are similar programs for expedited clearance at land and sea border crossings between the United States and Canada and United States and Mexico, respectively.

In summary, Global Entry is a program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. It includes automated kiosks at select airports and TSA PreCheck, a separate program that allows for expedited screening at participating U.S. Airport Security checkpoints. Additionally, Global Entry members also have access to NEXUS and SENTRI programs for expedited clearance at land and sea border crossings between the United States and Canada and United States and Mexico.
